Fantastic Drama Group

Neil Dyson interviewed Anthony Hulme and Jan Curran from the Drama Group that meets on Wednesdays at the OFS. He arranged the interview himself and did all the hard work so we're all very impressed with him at Chatterbox5. This is what the drama group had to say:

We did a performance of our play 'Faces' in December for the Annual General Meeting of Independent Advocacy in Northwich. The performance took place at St Wilfred's Church Hall. We like to make up our own performances by improvising and we hope to do a performance in Crewe in the spring. We are working on some new ideas including Laurel and Hardy and working with puppets too. We like to use the actors own ideas and we rehearse at the Old Fire Station every Wednesday evening. We are looking for a few new members who are interested in drama and can travel independently and make a regular commitment to attend. If you are interested please call Jan Curran 07526463388.

Anthony also told us about the People's Parliament:

The People's Parliament is for people with learning disablities. We we trying to help people with social care and trying to get people to join together to write to mp's and put our questions to the prime minister in Downing Street in London - if you are interested, get in touch.

New Castle Cafe!

Last Tuesday our aquafit group went onto Castle to see if the new cafe was open. The man who was there told us that the cafe was opening the next day - it's called Castle Cafe and looked very nice, clean and inviting so why not give it a go?

On the way back to Firdale we called at the shop and then carried on walking up to the Greenbank Hotel, then we crossed over and came through the Pippins estate. Neil noticed that there was a lot of traffic which made the roads very busy and dangerous.

Neil's News

My dad likes to go shooting pheasants. I used to go with him and do some beating. Beating is when somebody goes through the rough grass and bushes and trees to scare the pheasants. They fly up out of the bushes and then the men shoot them. We like to have the pheasants for dinner.

Manchester Airport Art Project

These are pictures from December when a group from Firdale and the Old Fire Station went to Ellesmere Port Boat Musuem to get inspiration for an art project that's going to be displayed at Manchester Airport - all about the area's heritage. We all had fun making our sculpture, shown here with Charlie Royle. We're looking forward to it going up for everyone to see!

Join the Flock

Famous artist Anthony Gormley's latest project is to create a flock over over 5000 pom pom sheep that will be displayed in a gallery somewhere to be arranged - check out the website - www.jointheflock.co.uk. Anyone can get involved and we've just started a knitting and craft group on a Friday at the Old Fire Station called the Knotty Knitters. We're designing posters and going to invite members of the local community in to join us soon too. In the meantime we've been hard at work making sheep and Karen Morrey, Patsy Scott and Viv Taylor have made some fantastic sheep to join the big flock. Patsy says:"It was fun making mine, I'm going to do lots more!".

At the weekend I tidied my bedroom. On Sunday Elaine my carer cooked me and Neil a nice roast dinner. I helped Elaine to cook the meal because she was tired.

Today I went with Emma, Neil, Kevin, Nicola, Ricky and Neil to our Aqua fit session. I went for a swim first. When the session started we did exercises to music. It is very good for me and I really like it. When aqua fit finished I had another swim.
I feel very fit now that I have done lots of exercise.

Save the World!

There are a lot of people suffering from diseases. There should be more hospitals built for their needs.

Can we as a nation come together and help these people to get back on their feet?

All fundraising efforts will be very much appreciated!

Big Thank You!

To Helen and all the staff from Solarized for supporting us in 2011 - from Edwina and all the staff on the network.

Helen very generously donated hair and nail vouchers as prizes for both our Masquerade Ball and the December Oaklands Ball last year.

Solarized is above Webbs Butchers in town for anyone who wants to book in for a bit of pampering.

Community Cafe News

We've been open for a few weeks now at the Old Fire Station serving refreshments and cakes from 10.30am to 2pm onMondays and Tuesdays. Everyone has been welcomed and we've enjoyed seeing people coming in.
We've got an impressive selection of artwork on the walls from the local London Road college. Mark Reeves has designed a display of both his own and students’ work. Visitors can also find out more about local groups like the Voluntary Action Group, Cheshire Link, and local colleges from our information board.
We've been serving hot and cold drinks, toast with jams, along with homemade soup and cakes from our baking group. Over the Christmas period the team we were also busy selling Christmas cakes, homemade doorstops and cards and boxes as well as Christmas wreaths.
Service Supervisor at the Old Fire Station, Jo Silva said: “A group of our service users have been studying for an NVQ in Food and so the Community Cafe is an ideal way of showing off their new skills.”
Clare Brandon and Amy Banford were two of the first service users to work in the cafe, they said: “We are so happy to be able to do this and meeting new people is lovely, though we are usually really tired by the end of the day.”

Watch this space too as we're setting up a knitting group on Fridays and we're taking part in Anthony Gormley's Join the Flock art project.
For more information call Jo at the Old Fire Station on 01606 49276.

Doctor Who at Christmas

The Doctor Who Christmas Episode was full of Christmas thrills and chills.

It was very magical and there was a Tree King and Tree Queen that needed help to save their trees. Dr Who and the mother of the child that went through the box helped to save the trees from the Acid Rain. I really enjoyed watching this episode.
